Arthur van der Wees is an attorney in his native Holland. He studied and obtained a
doctorate degree in business, computer, and privacy law at Leiden University,
which, in the 1990s, led him to explore IT law, information law, data protection law,
intellectual property rights, banking and monetary law. His thesis paper focused on
the conflicts between the Internet and personal data privacy protection, freedom of
information and speech, IPR and business. Arthur has combined that knowledge
with real world applications thereof into strategic legal services and products, and
thus is active in state of the art high tech and connected industries for almost 20
years. He is a founder and managing director of Arthur’s Legal, an international law
firm with its headquarters in Amsterdam and offices in Brussels, Barcelona, New
York, and Seoul.
Arthur is a standardization expert, entrepreneur, strategist, technologist, investor,
and frequent speaker worldwide that includes the Brookings Institute, Digital4EU,
NetFutures, ETSI, NIST, AIOTI, Cloud Security Alliance, Cloud Architect Alliance,
Cloud Financial Services New York and Holland Fintech. Arthur has in-depth
experience and is well connected in the world of technology, data and global
business. Arthur is a member of the European Commission Cloud SIG on cloud
computing and SLA’s (C-SIG SLA) and Alliance IoT Innovation (AIOTI), where he is a
Co-Chair of AIOTI WG4 (Policy), Project Leader of the AIOTI WG3 Security in IoT
working group and Project Leader of the AIOTI WG3 Privacy in IoT working group.
Arthur is a co-author of the European Commission Cloud SLA Standardisation
Guidelines and CSA’s Privacy Level Agreement 2.0 and co-contributor to ISO
standards such as ISO/IEC 19086. Arthur is a co-founder of CloudQuadrants,
Cyberchess Institute, Cyber Trust Institute and the Institute for Next Generation
Compliance. One of Arthur’s other ventures is the Zapplied Platform, a tech
company with offices in Amsterdam and New York that combines cloud technology,
artificial intelligence, and compliancy forensics.
In the past year, he is an advisor to MIT Labs on Blockchain technology in the
Fintech space.
