Upstate NY community names Sasquatch its 'official animal'

An Upstate New York community this month declared Sasquatch - commonly known as "Bigfoot" - the community's official animal.
The Whitehall Village Board unanimously passed the resolution at its June meeting. The resolution notes that there are four prominent Bigfoot statues in the community and that the "annual Bigfoot Half Marathon and a Sasquatch Festival draws people from 200 miles around the Northeast U.S. and Canada, all making Whitehall o tourism destination-point for Bigfoot searchers," reported the Albany Times Union.
The small, Washington County community is frequently referred to as Bigfoot Capital of the East Coast.
Strange sightings have been recorded for years - with the most sensational occurring in August 1976 when three teen driving on an isolated stretch of Abair Road said they came across a bizarre, man-like " beast " standing over 7-8 feet tall and covered with hair. They got a friend, and he reported seeing it as well. The three drove to the Whitehall Police station.
State Troopers that night, and local police and a trooper the following night both reported seeing "the beast."
The sightings have continued until this day, say Sasquatch enthusiasts.
The Animal Planet series "Finding Bigfoot" came to the community in 2015 to talk to local officials and residents about their enactment of a law protecting Sasquatch from hunters.
The village board's resolution also declares the last Saturday of September as "Sasquatch Appreciation Day." This year's Sasquatch Calling Festival -- featuring screenings of the documentary "The Beast of Whitehall" -- takes place Sept. 29 in Skenesborough Park.
The Whitehall festival is one of two Bigfoot events this fall in Upstate New York.
The other is Chautauqua Lake Bigfoot Festival set for Oct. 12-13 at Camp Onyahsa in DeWittville in Chautauqua County.
Among the offerings of the two-day event, "eyewitnesses from Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties, Warren CountyPA area and across the USA will speak about their sightings in a documentary movie, 'I've Seen Bigfoot.' "
