President Trump applauded Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for saying that the team’s players must stand for the national anthem on the sidelines before games this season.

"Way to go Jerry. This is what the league should do!" Trump tweeted Friday morning.

Jones stated his stance on the anthem on Wednesday during a press conference as the team opened training camp in Oxnard, California, just days after the league announced it would freeze its controversial new anthem policy.

The policy would have given players the option of staying in the locker room while allowing teams to discipline players who took a knee or sat during the anthem.

When asked if he would support players staying in the locker room, Jones said, ”No, our policy is that you stand at the anthem, toe on the line.”

Over the past two NFL seasons, dozens of NFL players have demonstrated during the national anthem to protest racial injustice and police brutality.

The debate intensified when President Trump took up the issue last year, calling on NFL owners to fire players who failed to respect the anthem and American flag.

Jones also said Trump's involvement in the issue has been "problematic" for the league and he wishes the controversy would "go away."

On "Outnumbered," Trish Regan said she empathizes with Jones because the league's bottom line has been negatively impacted by the anthem protests. < >

"From a patriotic perspective, I don't like. But from a business perspective, I really don't like it," Regan said.

Former CIA official Daniel Hoffman said NFL players certainly have a right to exercise their free speech, but they should ask themselves if they could take a stand for social justice without taking a knee.

"Know your audience, know the people whom you want to address on these issues. And think about: Is that the best way to do it?" Hoffman said.
