Seattle's new streetcars may be too big for the tracks

SEATTLE - There are new problems for the troubled Seattle streetcar expansion project.
Mayor Jenny Durkan's office announced Tuesday the new streetcars purchased for the project may not be the right size.
The streetcars would eventually be used for the Center City Connector, which is supposed to link the South Lake Union Streetcar to the First Hill Line.
But, according to the mayor's office, the new cars ordered for the expansion are heaving, longer and wider than the existing street cars.
Councilmember Liza Herbold also said the larger cars won't fit into the current maintenance barns and they also may not even fit the gauge of the rail, which could more rack up more construction costs to fix the error.
The whole project was put on hold back in March, after a review found a $23 million budget shortfall - which would have brought the cost to more than $200 million dollars.
Mayor Durkan ordered an independent review of the project.
The city expect that report in August. It also said a more detailed engineering review will be critical to address the concerns about the weight and dimensions of the new cars, and the impact they might have on the cost of the project.
