The Rebellion Against Trump Grows As Conservative Columnist Says He Would Take Obama Back In A Nanosecond
Conservative columnist Max Boot who worked on the Republican campaigns of 2008 and 2012 wrote that he would take Obama back in a nanosecond over Trump.
Boot wrote in The Washington Post:
Now I would take Obama back in a nanosecond. His presidency appears to be a lost golden age when reason and morality reigned. All of his faults, real as they were, fade into insignificance compared with the crippling defects of his successor.
And his strengths — seriousness, dignity, intellect, probity, dedication to ideals larger than self — shine all the more clearly in retrospect.…
Conservatives accused Obama of hating America and going on an “apology tour.” Obama never claimed, however, that poor relations with Russia were the fault of “U.S. foolishness and stupidity” rather than Russian wrongdoing. Obama may have been naive in trying to “reset” relations with Moscow, but he did not say that Russian President Vladimir Putin is a “fine” person — and he did not endorse the Russian’s lies over the truths unearthed by the U.S. intelligence community.
The Iran nuclear deal was flawed, but it was infinitely stronger than the non-agreement Trump reached with North Korea. Obama even looks like a fiscal conservative compared with Trump, who is ushering in trillion-dollar deficits.
Boot isn’t an Obama fanboy. He was writing from the perspective of someone who disagreed with Obama, but it has taken Donald Trump for some conservatives to give Obama his fair due.
You can disagree with any leader on policy, but whether it was Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, or Ronald Reagan, there was no doubt that they were trying to do what they thought was the right thing for America.
The same can’t be said for Donald Trump, who appears to be actively working against the interests of his own country.
The conservatives who haven’t fallen in line with the Trump cult have learned an important lesson. Character and competency matter in a president. Intelligence and thoughtfulness are not traits to be campaigned against.
The vast majority of Republicans will go down with the Putin/Trump ship, but the rebellion is growing. One senses that the climate is right for a third political party that would be a true conservative alternative to Trump.
Obama is getting the respect he deserves, and to think that all it took was a treasonous president for him to get it.
