Yes, having the control over selling specific share lots is a great way to go!
In addition to being able to choose specific lots to sell on Etrade, I have my general settings set to "Last in, First Out" so that only my most recently purchased share lots will be sold first.
If you have any losses, profits can be deducted against previous losses dollar for dollar. Profits from either short or long-term shares (or both) can be used to balance off your losses.
Since long-term shares (held over one year) are more valuable, this year, to balance off my previous losses, my plan is to sell only short-term SFOR shares, -for $0 taxes for 2018.
