OAKVILLE, Ontario, May 16, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Terrestrial Energy announced today that it has named Dr. John Luxat to its Advisory Board. Dr. Luxat is the Research Chair in Nuclear Safety Analysis at McMaster University and a leading expert in nuclear engineering with a specialty in safety analysis particularly of advanced reactor systems.
“The IMSR is a leading Generation IV nuclear power plant design, and I am excited to be a part of the project,” Dr. Luxat said. “I am impressed by the progress Terrestrial Energy is making with its Integral Molten Salt Reactor. Molten salt Generation IV nuclear reactor designs have the potential to deliver excellence in nuclear safety and lower cost. These are features of great interest to me and to the nuclear power industry.”
Simon Irish, CEO of Terrestrial Energy added: “As a globally recognized leader in nuclear engineering, Dr. John Luxat brings to Terrestrial Energy a wealth of expertise in the safety analysis of advanced nuclear reactor designs. We are pleased that he has joined the IMSR team.”
Dr. Luxat is Senior NSERC/UNENE Industrial Research Chair in Nuclear Safety Analysis at the McMaster University Department of Engineering Physics in Hamilton, Ontario since 2004. A leading researcher in the field of nuclear science, he is a widely published expert in severe accident analysis and experimental testing and analytical modeling of nuclear thermal hydraulics. He has an established record of key technical contributions in the modeling and analysis of systems, components and physical processes in nuclear power plants.
Dr. Luxat has served on the board of directors of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. and was the Manager of Nuclear Safety Technology for Ontario Power Generation. He has served as the president of the Canadian Nuclear Society. He currently serves as Chairman of the International Nuclear Energy Academy. Dr. Luxat received his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Windsor and received his Masters and Bachelors of Electrical Engineering degrees from the University of Cape Town.
About Terrestrial Energy
Terrestrial Energy is a developer of Advanced Nuclear power plants that use its proprietary Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) technology. This technology represents true innovation in cost reduction, versatility and functionality. IMSR power plants will provide clean, convenient, dispatchable and cost-competitive heat for many industrial applications, including electric power provision and heat for industrial processes, such as chemical synthesis and desalination. They extend the application of nuclear energy far beyond electric power markets. IMSR power plants promise to transform industrial competitiveness, energy security, and drive economic growth. Their deployment can realize rapid global decarbonization of the primary energy system by displacing fossil fuel combustion across a broad spectrum. Using an innovative design, and proven and demonstrated Molten Salt Reactor technology, Terrestrial Energy plans to bring IMSR power plants to markets in the 2020s.
