Only 1.3 percent of the employed in Albania have a salary higher than ALL 2 million per year. The figure, which has been made public by the General Directorate of Taxation, indicates the low wage levels that employees earn in Albania, but partly it is also the result of evasion.
According to the General Directorate of Taxation, for the last year there are only 8700 people with salaries over 2 million lek per year. Although compared to 2016, the number of individuals with wage income over 2 million ALL per year has increased by 5 percent, it remains negligible in relation to the total number of employees.
According to INSTAT, currently in Albania there are 665 thousand 800 employed in the state and private sector, excluding the employees in agriculture. This means that only 1.3 percent of them have more than 2 million lek per year.
Official data from the European Institute of Statistics show that Albania is the country with the lowest wages in Europe. According to Eurostat, in 2017 the average salary in Albania was 357 euros per month, or 4 times lower than the EU average.
Even according to data from the Investment Council, wages in Albania are lower than in similar countries in the region, where the average salary ranges from 424 euros in Bosnia to up to 740 euros in Montenegro.
