Jayman BUILT breaking ground in Bowness on new development for Calgary’s homeless

CALGARY, Alberta, May 12, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Today, at a ground breaking event in Bowness, Jayman BUILT (Jayman), in partnership with the RESOLVE Campaign, Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF) and HomeSpace Society (HomeSpace) unveiled the name of a new building that will provide permanent housing with supports to 30 formerly homeless, vulnerable Calgarians. The new building is named The Clayton, and it gains its name from Alvin Clayton (A.C.) Westman, Jayman’s founder.

The Clayton is the RESOLVE Campaign’s seventh new building to be constructed for CHF and HomeSpace that addresses the critical shortage of supported and affordable permanent housing in Calgary. Jayman, CHF and HomeSpace together have committed to the development of The Clayton, expected to be finished in summer 2019.

“Building the Calgary community to make it a place for everyone to have safety and stability is embedded in who we are and what we value at Jayman. This is a true testament to our mission and how we want to improve Calgary for all its citizens,” said Jay Westman, CEO, Jayman BUILT. “This project enables us to take one step closer to finding a solution to Calgary’s homelessness crisis.”

The RESOLVE Campaign was a first-of-its-kind collaboration bringing nine agencies together to raise funds to create affordable and supported rental housing.

The Clayton was made possible through the Government of Alberta’s unprecedented commitment to providing affordable housing with on-site access to support services, as well as the generous commitment of philanthropic donors, including The Clayton’s visionary donor and builder, Jayman BUILT. This project was also made possible through the financial support of the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

“This collaboration between government, the Calgary Homeless Foundation, HomeSpace Society, Jayman BUILT and the RESOLVE Campaign, is a demonstration that homelessness can end when we intentionally choose to work together,” said Diana Krecsy, president and CEO, Calgary Homeless Foundation. “The Clayton represents more than just a home for 30 individuals experiencing homelessness. It represents hope and provides a stable place of belonging from which to build a better future.”

HomeSpace is a charitable real-estate developer, property owner and manager that provides close to 500 units of affordable housing in over 20 communities throughout Calgary and is the developer and owner of the building in Bowness. CHF was one of RESOLVE’s nine partners and raised capital through the Campaign to support its housing collaborator HomeSpace Society in the development of a series of permanent supportive housing buildings for vulnerable Calgarians.

The RESOLVE Campaign ended March 31, 2018. However, its impact and collaborative spirit will continue to be felt throughout Calgary.
