TIRANA, April 17 / ATSH / - The international media has dedicated a special place to the European Commission's recommendation to start talks with Albania and Macedonia.
"Financial Times" writes that "the clash for strategic influence in the Western Balkans began today when the European Commission recommended starting the talks with Albania and Macedonia to join the EU."
The proposal for opening the negotiations will be the first to be proposed after almost five years and comes in a moment when the EU is competing with Russia for influence in the countries of the former Yugoslavia and their neighbors.
This recommendation should reach a final approval in June by EU heads of state, who will weigh the expansion with concerns affecting organized crime, corruption and bilateral disputes in the region.
Albania and Macedonia will join two other Balkan states, Serbia and Montenegro, in EU talks.
The ambitious commission plan, though only advisory, is that the countries from the region should become members of the bloc by 2025.
The Washington Post writes that the European Commission recommended that the EU begin membership talks with Albania and Macedonia, although the enthusiasm for the 28-nation bloc's expansion has declined.
"The EU's executive arm, monitoring the progress of reforms among the countries hoping to join," announced today that the two countries are on track.
EU Foreign Affairs Minister Federica Mogherini said "the recommendations are based on a strong, stern assessment of the progress made."
She added that "the decision to recommend the opening of negotiations is an encouragement for these countries to continue on the path of reform."
The New York Times states that "the European Commission recommended starting membership talks with Albania and Macedonia, although the enthusiasm for expansion in the 28-nation bloc has fallen."
"The two countries are on track," said the commission.
Meanwhile, union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said the recommendations "are based on the strict appreciation of the progress made."
"Le Figaro" writes that " the European Commission today proposed EU member states to open negotiations for an accession of Albania and Macedonia."
"The European Commission proposed that the Council open the accession negotiations for Albania and Macedonia," Mogherini said during a press conference in Strasbourg where the European Parliament was convening in plenary session.
"Le Monde" states that " Will the European Union enlarge two new Balkan countries? The European Commission proposed today, on April 17, the EU member states to open negotiations for an accession of Albania and Macedonia.
"The decision is based on the assessment of the progress made by these two countries on the recommendations made in 2016 and a review of the measures applied by Tirana and Skopje," Mogherini explains during a press conference in Strasbourg. .
