They don't have to cover at any set price but I assume they do have to keep paying the ever increasing monthly interest costs (assuming price is rising) to the broker that sold them the short. Now when the MM/broker has to close the naked short is beyond me.
Same argument goes as to when a dividend is paid. They would have to pay the broker/MM but who they then pay I have no clue.
