As tensions heat up between Russia and the West, President Donald Trump reportedly warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that Moscow would not win in a new arms race.
"If you want to have an arms race, we can do that, but I'll win," Trump said, according to NBC News.
The remark came during a phone call to Putin last week following Putin's claim earlier this month that Russia has nuclear-capable weapons that could evade U.S. missile defense systems.
However, a Russian news agency quoted a Kremlin spokesman denying the exchange took place.
Earlier Friday, the Russian Ministry of Defense showed the test launch of a ballistic missile called "Satan 2," which Putin has claimed could reach anywhere in the world.
Russia announced Thursday it will expel 60 U.S. diplomats and close the U.S. consulate in St. Petersburg in retaliation for a similar move by the U.S. in response to the poisoning of an ex-Russian spy in Britain.
On "Outnumbered" on Friday, Lisa Boothe said many on the left and in the media have been calling for Trump to get tougher on Russia, yet now they complain when Trump takes strong action and the situation escalates.
"What did you think was going to happen? Of course the Trump administration knew there was going to be retaliation," Boothe said.
She argued that Trump has a track record of being tough on Russia, pointing to his decision to increase sanctions, sell lethal arms to Ukraine and use energy exports as a geopolitical tool.
"The Democrats have just intentionally ignored it."
