NATO interoperability is a factor considered with DOD. Italy is a NATO mrmber country. Consequently, the Pentagon strives to work and play well with them giving them a fair shot at contracts if they meet our mil spec. Example, I carried an Italian made, 9mm Automatic Baretta 92FS as my sidearm when it replaced the prior issue S&W 38 cal revolver.
