Bruce, While I believe that what you're saying

While I believe that what you're saying is true, I also believe that people think that if they live long enough both cancer and alzheimer disease occur. I believe that their is some truth to that with regard to cancer, but also that we're living longer and more active lives, and many people who'd have died years ago, perhaps of cancers that were not discovered, are living as more cancers are being found, and dealt with. Personally I'd probably be dead had my form of leukemia occurred before Gleevec was discovered, but it's now been around long enough that I'm using a generic form of the drug.
I do also believe that some of the things we're putting into the atmosphere do cause cancer, so while we're doing a better job of dealing with it, we're also causing it to occur more frequently than prior to the industrial age. Efforts to reduce the hazards should gradually lower these rates, but I don't believe that we can totally eliminate cancer, or cure every form of it, but we're making headway.
