CLNE - Clean Energy Fuels are involved in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). CNG has been used since the 90's and while it has spread across the US it's still has not caught on. Why?
1) CNG is a gas and needs to be stored in expensive 3600psi tank. The tanks must be round with dome ends to contain that energy thus packaging bulky issue. A 80 gallon unit which is a multiple tank configuration is ~95sf of vehicle space
2) Since its a gas temperature has an effect cold shrinkage and hot expands. Both conditions have effect on how much gas is stored on the vehicle. Cold days limit the pressure in the tank and how much gas you can get out of it. Hot days limits the amount of gas you can put into the tanks.
3) Currently no top tier auto manufactures make a CNG vehicle. Honda did yet stopped due to low sales. There are converter out there that take a new vehicle and $8K to make it CNG.
4) Truck fleets typically use CNG garbage, cement and bus
5) Cost of fueling you either need a CNG station near you or install your own. There is a lot of capital cost here (compressors, dispenser pre-gas clean-up...
Good things about CNG!
1) The typical measure CNG in GGE (Gas Gallon Equivalency) or DGE (Diesel Gallon Equivalent) as it is based on the energy equaling a gallon of fuel. Gas is cheap around <$1-$2/gge depending on state tax.
2) It burns clean, oil doesn't turn black like other fuels thus extending oil life.
3) It has a high octane so increase the compression ratio
Other tickers to watch when this moves are:
WPRT -WestPort as they are the engine tuner who take diesel engines and convert them to run on CNG.
PH -Parker they do fittings.
