In a powerful op-ed in the New York Times, columnist Bethany Mandel explained why she felt she needed to exercise her Second Amendment rights.
In the piece, entitled "I Wanted to Be a Good Mom. So I Got a Gun." the mother of three wrote that for many Americans, the desire to legally own a firearm is "motivated precisely by our devotion to protecting our kids."

Speaking on "Fox & Friends," Mandel pushed back on the narrative from some on the left that mothers who support gun rights - including NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch - don't care about children being harmed.
"They're targeting our motherhood and saying 'you're not a good mother because you own guns.' What they don't understand, especially if you've never grown up around guns, is that a lot of us have guns because we have children," she explained.
Mandel said much of the anti-gun narrative comes from the mainstream media corridor between New York City and Washington, D.C., where the vast majority of people live within a few minutes of police.
She said many Americans do not live in a place where police can be at your door within minutes if you call 911.
"You have to be able to protect yourself," she said, explaining that she and her husband moved from New York to New Jersey in part because it was easier to own a gun.
Mandel said she was motivated to complete the lengthy process in The Garden State after she was threatened by readers of the neo-Nazi website Daily Stormer for her criticism of then-candidate Donald Trump.
She said her appreciation for guns goes back to her late single mother brandishing a rifle to chase off a man who was lurking outside her open bedroom window when she was a child.
