some history on them

The Sparrows (The Sparrow) was a Canadian blues rock band that existed in the 1960s and had evolved out of Jack London & The Sparrows. Notable for being the first group to break out musician John Kay into the mainstream, The Sparrows later morphed into the popular heavy rock group Steppenwolf.

Early years

In early 1964, a Canadian emigrate Dave Marden (born on 16 February 1944 in London, UK) whose stage name was jack London and Dennis McCrohan (born on April 21, 1943, Oshawa, Ontario) later known as Dennis Edmonton initially formed the group named "Jack London & The Sparrows", whose first steps were made in Oshawa. The group was pretending to be from England and all the members of the group were singing with great "fake" English accents. But when Jerry Edmonton, Dennis' brother ( born Jerry McCrohan, on October 24, 1946, Oshawa, Ontario) joined the group instead of the original drummer they became to attract the local fans performing shows on different Canadian venues such as Jubilee Auditorium. But later the same year they moved to Toronto and made some regrouping where C J Feeney on organ and Bruce Palmer (born on September 9, 1946, Toronto) on bass joined the group. The new group cast signed to Capitol Records and their first single "If You Don't Want My Love" became number 3 hit on the national chart. Soon after their debut single had been released Feeney and Palmer left the group to make their own careers and were substituted by jazz musician Art Ayre (born on March 18, 1942, Toronto, Ontario). They issued the first album "Presenting Jack London & The Sparrows" and some singles, the most successful of which "Our Love Has Passed" reached only number 7 on local RPM chart in May 1965. [3]

Singer/songwriter and guitarist Dennis Edmonton, drummer Jerry Edmonton and bass player Nick St. Nicholas had all played together in Toronto “British Invasion” band, Jack London & The Sparrows between January and July 1965.

When the group separated from singer Jack London, The Sparrows recorded a final single on their own before adding new members, vocalist/guitarist/harmonica player and songwriter John Kay and keyboard player Goldy McJohn.

As the new look Sparrows, the group made its live debut at Waterloo Lutheran University (now Wilfrid Laurier University) in Waterloo, Ontario during September 1965 and immediately made an impact with its high energy, blues rock sound. The following month, the band supported Gary Lewis & The Playboys at Massey Hall in Toronto and also found regular work at Chez Monique and the El Patio in the city’s Yorkville village.[4]
