I'm calling foul here. While complaining about water quality, officials are now lamenting the improved clarity of Lake Michigan. They state that it will result in decreased productivity and all the little fishes will have less food and nowhere to hide. I missed the part where greater light penetration increases rooted plant growth, increases spawning beds, thus a larger littoral zone.
Granted, zebra mussels are a pita for cities drawing water from the lake. But those intakes can be serviced. Similar concerns were voiced here on the Misssissippi. Yet improved water quality and fishery have all but silenced these critics.
