On September 23, 1950, Omar Bradley , who thirty years earlier had worried that he would never advance above the rank of lieutenant colonel, was promoted to five-star General of the Army, the fifth and last officer to hold that grade. A long with the promotion came a pay increase to $17,000 a year.
