By the end of January, natives of Washington state will have a third sex option on their birth certificates.
On January 27, Washingtonians will be able to change their current "male" or "female" designations to an "X" designation, Lisa Boothe reported.
Oregon became the first state to allow the practice, and California's law goes into effect later this year.
According to the Seattle Times, the Washington Department of Health considers the "X" gender to include "intersex, agender, amalgender, androgynous, bi-gender, genderqueer and two-spirit" designations, among others.
“This is an opportunity to reduce risk of harassment and promote health equity," DOH official Christie Spice told the paper.
