CHICAGO, IL — The unsanitary behavior of a single passenger forced a plane full of travelers hoping to leave the bitter cold of Chicago to find themselves landing in Alaska Thursday after an unusually crappy United flight.
Airport police in Anchorage said United Airlines flight 895 from O'Hare to Hong Kong was diverted due to a topless passenger who is blamed for smearing feces in the cabin.
"I guess it got their attention," said Lt. Joe Gamache of the Anchorage Airport Police and Fire Department.
Ground crews in Alaska received word around 4:45 p.m. local time that a 22-year-old man had "defecated and made a mess" in at least two of its bathrooms, Gamache said.
The passenger, travelling on a Vietnamese passport, was "having some type of issue" and also took off his shirt and stuffed it into one of the plane's toilets.
When the Boeing 777 landed at Ted Stevens International Airport around 6:30 p.m. local time, the shirtless smearer was greeted by the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and the local police.
By that point, the man was cooperative with flight attendants and was sitting in his assigned seat.
Federal agents determined his behavior had not risen to the level of interfering with a flight crew. Police said he was interviewed with a translator before being taken to Alaska Regional Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.
"This one basically fell in the medical category," said Gamache, who explained about three flights end up diverted to Anchorage for medical or criminal emergencies every month.
A United Airlines spokesperson described the passenger as "disruptive." The company said it provided hotel accommodations for passengers and is "working to get them to their destinations as quickly as possible."
The plane was grounded overnight for "maintenance," KTVA-TV reported.
