This is not meaningless data. It's just that we con't have a way to interpret it correctly. And, since some of us have seen some of our trades not posting until after the close, as T trades, and some of us have seen our buys at the ask marked as "sells," the data itself is suspect.
But, it's not totally meaningless.
Again, there is NO REASON that the legal cumulative short interest can't be posted EVERY DAY instead of twice a month. Sure, the technology didn't exist a couple of decades ago and it would have been an undue burden back then.
But it exists now, and the only reason for it not to be posted is that they don't want the average investor to see it.
