There are two basic types of inaccurate information: Disinformation and misinformation.
Disinformation is outright lying or misrepresenting for marketing and propaganda purposes.
Misinformation is from innocent misunderstanding or confusion that is then regenerated inaccurately to others.
This seems to be happening more on the internet now than before. The coconut oil colocterol or colon cancer curing claims on the internet is a current example. Here are a few headlines picked at random from several:

-Coconut Oil: A New Cure for Colon Cancer
-Coconut Oil Kills Cancer, Fast! Amazing Cure!
Let’s check in with reality, using the actual study that was misrepresented and exaggerated, which hardly any of those articles with the spectacular headlines linked to or accurately quoted.
Someone early-on picked up on a misunderstood version of this study with assumptive conclusions and passed it on for others to repeat the misinformation. It’s that simple.
No one was cured of colorectal or colon cancer with coconut oil. It hasn’t even been attempted! This sort of projected conclusion is like the “10 dead doctors” nonsense that’s been going around.
