TheRecover.com Releases a Substance Abuse Article which Focuses on Binge Drinking and College Students

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 13, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With winter breaks around the corner, The Recover brings attention to the  binge drinking trend in colleges  around the country. The website has published new information regarding the dangers and statistics surrounding binge drinking in college-aged young adults from 18–24.

In the article, it shows that 1 in 4 college students reported academic consequences from drinking, ranging from an overall drop in grades to poor focus and inattention during classes. With that, a student who drank 3 times a week was 6 times more likely to perform poorly on a test or an assignment. Those who drank 3 times a week were also more likely to have missed a class.

According to a study held in 2014 by the SAMHSA group, 1,825-college students died by alcohol-related unintentional accidents, including motor vehicle crashes. Also, an astounding 696,000 students were assaulted by someone who was drinking. 97,000 students between the ages of 18-24 were involved in some type of sexual assault of date rape.

With the new freedoms that college brings, students are more tempted to try new things and gain peer approval. With the excess of alcohol around college campuses, students are finding it easy to drink during their stay at their universities. But colleges around the country are now banning the activities fueling binge drinking, and prohibiting all sorority and fraternity functions. Florida State University made the decision after finding 20-year-old Andrew Coffey unresponsive the morning after a fraternity party. His parents have praised the  college  for upholding the ban on the college’s fraternities and sororities. FSU President John Thrasher said, “For this suspension to end, there will need to be a new normal for Greek life at the university. There must be a new culture, and our students must be full participants in creating it.”
