They do that all the time. You'll see a market maker with a big number of shares on the bid, and then a cent or two above that, the same market maker puts a big sell order. One of our good posters here put in a big buy order at the price listed for a 70,000 share sell -- and magically he did NOT get filled, and the 70k "sell" disappeared.
They just manipulate these displayed bids and asks to try to scare or excite the small investors. We have to know that they are playing games, and look at the numbers we see with skepticism as to their veracity.
Also I suspect that the 56k shares were covering a short.
