NFL Player to Wear
Custom Cleats to Honor
Colin Kaepernick < >
A Tennessee Titans player plans to wear special cleats on Sunday to honor Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback whose decision to kneel during the national anthem has sparked heated debate over social justice protests.
Wide receiver Rishard Matthews shared a photo of the "Know Your Rights" cleats, which also include a drawing of Kaepernick and the name "Colin" on them.
Matthews wrote: "I dont have a foundation so i have chosen to support my brother @kaepernick7 foundation @yourrightscamp for #MyCauseMyCleats He has paid the ultimate sacrifice in order to bring true everyday issues to light."
Matthews, whose brother was killed while serving in Afghanistan, will wear the cleats as part of the NFL's "My Cleats, My Cause" initiative, which allows players a one-week reprieve from the league's strict dress code in order to honor a charitable cause.
Matthews wrote in October in a since-deleted tweet that he'd quit the NFL if players were forced to stand for the national anthem.
Kaepernick, who remains unsigned, has filed a grievance against the NFL, accusing the owners of colluding to keep him out of the league after he knelt for the national anthem last season.
The NFL triggered some outrage last season when they refused to allow a player to wear 9/11-themed cleats to honor those who died in the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
The league also denied the Dallas Cowboys' request to wear decals on their helmets to honor five police officers killed in a 2016 ambush attack.
Many other NFL players will also be wearing the artistic cleats in order to raise money for a range of different charities and great causes.
