eyeSight Technologies' Growing Computer Vision IP Portfolio Adds New Patents to Deliver Direct Interaction Between Humans and Machines

HERTZLIYA, ISRAEL--(Marketwired - Nov 28, 2017) -  eyeSight Technologies, a leader in advanced embedded computer vision and deep learning, has been awarded two new patents: one, referred to as the Direct Pointing Interaction technology, addresses solutions centered around direct pointing detection for interaction with a digital device and displays, and the other offers a solution for the power consumption issue in AR/VR headsets and wearable devices.

Issued in the U.S., eyeSight's new patent allows users to simply point toward a location of interest through either an AR/VR headset, an object on a display or at a smart home device -- i.e. smart TV, smart lights and thermostat -- to control it directly. Rather than using a complicated or indirect hand gesture to perform an action, such as lifting a finger upward to get control over a mouse cursor on the display and moving the finger until the cursor reaches a desired icon to be clicked on, the newly patented direct pointing technology can immediately detect the exact location a user is pointing at, making the interaction natural, direct and immediate. Devices with this particular technology will have the following capabilities in certain use cases that add a layer of intelligence and one-of-a-kind experience for users:

  • AR/VR headsets: While a user is wearing a VR device, the technology enables a highly intuitive interaction involving pointing at icons, allowing users to see and point to an object in the virtual world. The same capability is performed in AR devices, as users will be able to point to objects or points of interest in the real world, such as businesses, retail items in stores, or augmented icons.
  • IoT and smart home devices: Whether it be smart TVs, lights or thermostats, users can interact and control the device simply by pointing at it with a finger. For example, a user may point to the Netflix icon on their smart TV and simply point to the show and episode they wish to watch.
  • Automotive: In future autonomous cars, displays are expected to be located all over the interior of the vehicle. People will no longer be required to be "hands-on" with the wheel, but will be free to look and interact with augmented and displayed content in the car. The Direct Pointing Interaction technology will provide an ideal interaction in these new interiors, allowing users to lean back and point at icons, objects and surrounding points of interest they wish to engage with.

"The new Direct Pointing Interaction technology will provide the 'touch' in our future touch-free interaction world," said Itay Katz, Founder and CTO of eyeSight Technologies. "Communication between humans and machines should be natural and effortless, no matter what device a user chooses. Our goal in pursuing these patents is to create a future where users don't have to struggle with their devices, but can communicate and have their devices understand with little effort on their side."

The company was granted another new patent, this one in China, addressing the acute issue of gesture recognition's power consumption, which is mainly prevalent in AR/VR applications. By controlling the camera, changing the frame rates and video resolution, this patent helps reduce touch-free interaction solutions' normal power consumption rate by ten times.

eyeSight Technologies' IP Portfolio contains more than 40 patent applications worldwide and currently has 17 granted patents in the U.S., Asia and Europe. This growth puts eyeSight in a leading position in such a crucial market, as more and more patents in the computer vision and machine learning space are being developed to make devices more intelligent and lessen the interaction gap between humans and machines.
