In 9 years Honduras releases more than 460,000 sea

TEGUCIGALPA, HONDURAS, Nov. 22, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The release of more than 60,000 olive ridley sea turtles was held on the El Edén Beach, in Cedeño, municipality of Marcovia with the presence of government officials, military personnel, local business members, media and local fishermen in south coast of Honduras. This is 15%of the total amount of sea turtles released in the past 9 years.

For nine consecutive years Luz y Fuerza de San Lorenzo (Lufussa), member of the Grupo Luz y Fuerza (GLF), has been supporting the conservation of the olive ridley turtle, an endangered species in the Honduran Gulf of Fonseca. As a result of this effort, approximately 460,000 baby turtles have been released to date, in an activity that has become a tradition in the southern part of the country and is of great environmental impact due to the increase in the marine fauna of the gulf.

Lufussa has a collaboration agreement with the institutions that make up the Commission of Verification and Control of the Gulf of Fonseca (CVC-GOLF) and the Secretary of Natural Resources, Environment and Mines (MiAmbiente) with the objective of conserving and increasing the population of olive ridley sea turtles in the Honduran Pacific Ocean. CVV-GOLF is part of the municipal council of Marcovia, the 101st Infantry Brigade, Pro-Golfo, Codefagolf, Digipesca, Andah, UNAH and representatives of civil society in the southern part of the country.

The close season period for the olive ridley sea turtle is from September 1 to 25 of each year and 2017 has been a success since the goal of egg collection has tripled in comparison with the previous year in the five nesting points established in the coast of Marcovia. This year, nearly 60,000 baby turtles have been released to the sea to grow and develop. It is a fact that the turtles keep coming back to their place of release each year.

Lufussa contributes to the event through the purchase of materials, acquisition of fuels, specialized technical assistance during egg incubation, release and tabulation of biological data, among other support activities for the preservation of the olive ridley sea turtle in the south country.
