Loftex and GHCL are first Applied DNA customers to verify recycled bottle for consumer goods, providing trust through supply chain transparency
Celebrating America Recycles Day, November 15, Applied DNA Sciences, (Applied DNA) expands its initiative targeting recycled components across a wide variety of industries, including home goods, apparel, footwear, automotive and other industrial products. Applied DNA’s proprietary technology enables customers to identify and verify the origin of components used every day, and track them throughout the global supply chain. Its first customer, Loftex, uses Applied DNA’s CertainT® supply chain platform ensuring that the plastics used in towels are truly 100 percent recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET post-consumer) from recycled plastic bottles.
In addition to Loftex, Applied DNA has signed an agreement with GHCL, a global manufacturer of home textiles. GHCL will use Applied DNA’s CertainT platform to tag, test and track PET and recycled PET blended bed linens, pillowcases, and shams.
“Consumers are becoming increasingly concerned with protecting the environment as well as demanding more information about the impact, origin, and authenticity of their products,” said Dr. James A. Hayward, president and CEO of Applied DNA Sciences. “Our solution enables brands to provide consumers with certainty in knowing their recycled products are forensically authenticated from source to shelf.”
It takes 700 years for plastic bottles in landfills to start to decompose and currently less than 10 percent of plastic bottles in the U.S. are recycled. For every pound of rPET used, energy consumption is reduced by 84 percent and greenhouse gases are reduced by 71 percent. rPET has become an environmentally-sound solution for textile manufacturers.
“True sustainability requires pioneering business models and entrepreneurial partners,” added Hayward. “Platforms like CertainT helps companies produce recycled, innovative products utilizing an efficient and trusted traceability system with a fair return. Traceability and transparency, combined with trust in supply chains builds consumer confidence, it’s appealing to both brands and consumers.”
