My father sang in the choir. Every Sunday, 10 am High Mass, my father, along with the rest of the choir, sang from the balcony. We all would go with him because he would take us for an ice cream after church. The drug store was just one block away. As church would let out, we would race down the sidewalk to see who was first to get ice cream. This one sunday the owner of the drug store was replacing his New Glass Door! No lettering on it yet. No brass push bars installed yet. Just a glass door. My older brother was very competitive and was first to the drug store every time! WEll, he would run with his head down to run faster and this meant he thought the drug store door was propped open.
He hit that glass door head first and shattered it into a million pieces. The Owner was just staring in disbelief as we all followed my brother into the old corner drug store. My dad was the last in and of course was falling all over himself to apologize while the drug store owner was falling all over himself to make sure my brother was ok!!!
My brother was fine and went on to play football for ND! The owner gave us free ice cream every Sunday after that!!!
It was a less complicated time.
