A Navy veteran could not bring himself to accept a community service award from the New Orleans Saints because he is fed up with the national anthem protests.
Navy Commander John Wells (Ret.) was at first "touched, honored and excited" when offered the award before the season started. After seeing the players kneel in front of the flag he has served under, though, Wells said there was "no way" he could accept the award.
Wells, the executive director at a firm that represents veterans did "agonize" over the decision, he said.
The Saints' slammed Wells' decision, calling it "sad and divisive discourse" and said they will continue to support veterans.
"Other than a bunch of photo ops and a few free tickets I'm not sure what they've done to support vet," the Navy commander said.
