There are MANY diseases that mimic the symptoms of Alzheimers. In fact, I think the difficulty of finding drugs that work is not only that they are targeting the symptom (amyloid tangles) rather than the CAUSE of the disease -- but that some people who have other forms of dementia or other diseases entirely are being included in the study.
Remember, I posted that Washington Post article about the guy who was misdiagnosed with Alzheimers and participated in numerous clinical trials. Admittedly he was not in the moderate stage -- but still, there are diseases that create exactly what we think of as Alz symptoms, but are not Alzheimers.
Our diagnostic methods are not yet good.
There was an article just yesterday about how the contrast dye (gadolinium, a toxic element) for MRI's can cause Alzheimer's-like symptoms.
