Lincoln presented a bill for $2,000 to the Illinois Central for a legal work he did for the company in the 1850's. IC refused to pay saying, "This is as much as Daniel Webster himself would have charged." Lincoln then submitted a revised bill of $5,000. When the corporation refused to pay, he brought suit and won.
