Last I heard, he is a Republican. Which is why Newt Gingrich had such high praise for him before Newt found out Mueller was actually going to do his job.

Now that he actually is pursuing the investigation with vigor, Newt isn't as happy with him. Because Newt is a loyal Republican (as opposed to being a loyal American), while Mueller's reputation says his loyalties and integrity place America and Constitution above the party.

Mueller is a Republican but I remember an America when that would not have mattered. When an investigation into possible law breaking was not considered partisan, when no one would have thought to question the politics of a former FBI director, and when we would all have waited for the investigator to DO HIS JOB before we inquired about his possible political bias.

The Senate Select Committee on Watergate was bipartisan, and Republicans Lowell Weicker and Howard Baker never relented in their questions about President Nixon’s wrongdoings. No one expected less. Nor should we, if we have any hope for the future of a two-party system.

Let us assume that Robert Mueller, a Republican appointed by a Republican and defended unanimously by the Senate against a possible firing by Trump, will be non-partisan in his investigation. We are, as John Adams said, “a nation of laws, not of men.”
