POARCH CREEK INDIAN RESERVATION, AL, Oct. 13, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Poarch Band of Creek Indians today announced a $200,000 donation to the American Red Cross. The funds will go towards relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma; two catastrophic storms that have had major impacts in Texas and Florida in particular during this year’s hurricane season.
“We are so honored to be able to help our neighbors in their time of need. We know all too well the destruction and suffering that hurricanes and their aftermath can bring to communities. Our hope is that this donation will help those affected by these storms rebuild their homes, schools, churches and businesses. We also pray that these funds help restore a sense of security and normality to their lives that they may have lost,” Stephanie A. Bryan, Tribal Chair and CEO, Poarch Band of Creek Indians.
The Poarch Creek Tribal Council Members voted unanimously to make this donation, which is part of the Tribe’s ongoing Planned Giving Campaign. The donation will go directly to the Central Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross and will aid in disaster relief to provide victim assistance for the residents of Texas and Florida.

The Poarch Creek Indians are descendants of a segment of the original Creek Nation, which once covered almost all of Alabama and Georgia. Unlike many eastern Indian tribes, the Poarch Creeks were not removed from their tribal lands and have lived together for almost 200 years in and around the reservation in Poarch, Alabama. The reservation is located eight miles northwest of Atmore, Alabama in rural Escambia County, and 57 miles east of Mobile.
