VINCI Airports - Q3 2017 traffic

Continued traffic growth trend: up 12.2% in the third quarter

  • Record traffic during the summer season in most of the network airports
  • New key routes launched, including Lisbon/Beijing and Phnom-Penh/Dubai
  • Nantes Atlantique exceeds the 5 million passengers' milestone over 12 rolling months

In the third quarter of 2017, traffic across platforms managed by VINCI Airports increased 12.2%* compared to Q3 2016, with a total of 42.3 million passengers handled in the network airports.

In Portugal , the country's airports reported their best ever summer season by a wide margin, with 16.6 million passengers between July and September, up 14.7% on 2016. This growth notably reflects the good performance of Portugal's national airline TAP, which stepped up its expansion by opening new routes to Africa and the United Kingdom, and the recovery of traffic with Brazil. The low-cost carriers also turned in a good season, with high load factors as the country remains a sought-after destination for European tourists. Lisbon Airport, an optimum European connecting gateway between China and Latin America, confirmed its position as a regional hub with the launch, at the end of July, of direct flights between Beijing and Lisbon three times a week, operated by Beijing Capital Airlines. Traffic at the airport rose 16%.

In Cambodia , the strong traffic growth in the country's 3 airports ( up 31%) reflects excellent performance by airlines based in the country, as well as the arrival of new carriers and the opening of major new routes, including the launch by Emirates in early July of daily flights between Dubai and Phnom Penh. Q3 traffic at Phnom Penh International rose 32.8% over the previous year to more than a million passengers.

In France , traffic increased substantially in the third quarter at the facilities managed by VINCI Airports (up 9.9%). At Nantes Atlantique, traffic grew 15.4%, setting a record for third quarter and for the first time exceeding 5 million passengers over 12 rolling months. This performance was driven by the very good load factors of the Nantes-based Volotea, EasyJet and Transavia airlines and the launch of new international routes by British Airways and Lufthansa. Acivity was buoyant at Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport, where traffic rose 7.5% on the back of good performance by all airlines, particularly HOP! Air France and EasyJet, and an upturn in international traffic beyond Europe, including with Turkey and North Africa.

In Chile, where growth had been driven since the start of the year by international traffic, the launch of service by low-cost carrier JetSmart at the Santiago airport gave a new boost to domestic traffic (total traffic up 12.6%). International traffic continued to expand with the opening of numerous routes to

Latin America, Europe and the United States and the recovery of traffic with Brazil.

In Japan , the Kansai airports recorded Q3 growth of 8.5% on the previous year, setting a record for the three-month period. Growth was driven by the expansion of both low-cost and traditional airlines, particularly at Osaka Itami. International traffic with South Korea and Hong Kong continued to boost growth at Kansai International Airport (KIX), which also benefited from recovery in traffic with Europe.

In the Dominican Republic , adverse weather conditions combined with the crisis in Venezuela moderated Q3 traffic volume, which stabilised. Traffic nevertheless remained strong at the tourist airports of Puerto Plata (up 11.3%) and Samana (+6.3%), more particularly reflecting service to and from the United States.

This very good performance confirms trends observed at the beginning of the year. Between January and September, VINCI Airports network platforms served more than 112 million passengers, an increase of 12.6% over the previous year. Over 12 rolling months, VINCI Airports network platforms served 145 million passengers, up 12.4%.

* 100% contribution. Variations on a pro forma basis, including Kansai Airports, Aerodom and Lyon-Saint Exupéry on a full year basis in 2016 and excluding Salvador Airport in Brazil, which VINCI Airports will operate starting from early 2018.
