Texas A&M’s Kyle Field Breaks Record for Game Day Network Data Traffic

DALLAS, Oct. 04, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Tellabs, a leading provider of Passive Optical LAN (OLAN) solutions, is enjoying a 3rd year of superior network performance at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field as judged by the 100,000 Aggie football fans using the network on game day. College football season is here and Tellabs, along with Texas A&M University, is proud to announce that last season’s home games set record-breaking stadium network traffic peak usage leveraging a Passive Optical LAN operating at 20% capacity - and with plenty of room to grow the network in the future.

The Tellabs Optical LAN and wireless networks at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field continue to prove their heralded capability. Phillip Ray, Vice Chancellor for the Texas A&M University System, reported in excess of 8.2 total terabytes of wireless traffic on its stadium Wi-Fi internet data and Distributed Antenna System (DAS) cellular networks during the Aggies’ exciting 45-38 double-overtime victory over Tennessee on October 8, 2016. Of that number, approximately 4.4 TB was recorded on the stadium’s Optical LAN and Wi-Fi network, with another 3.8 TB recorded on the cellular DAS.

Ray commented, “ Perhaps even more impressive than the total tonnage numbers are the number of unique connections reported during the four-hour span during which Texas A&M recorded statistics. ” According to Ray, “ more than 52,000 fans connected to the Wi-Fi network at some point, 49 percent out of a total of 106,248 attending the October 8th game. The Wi-Fi network also saw nearly 32,000 fans connected to the Wi-Fi network at the same time, with both numbers surpassing Kyle Field’s previous high totals for both metrics. ”

The advantage of choosing Tellabs and Optical LAN for Texas A&M’s Kyle Field include:

  • The number of network closets in the stadium was reduced by over 50%.
  • The amount of copper cabling was reduced by approximately 90%.
  • OLAN, Wi-Fi and DAS connectivity over a common optical fiber infrastructure also reduced installation, management, cabling and powering requirements.

And all of this was accomplished at a cost that was significantly less than a traditional stadium infrastructure.

“ There is no better confirmation that the Tellabs Optical LAN system exceeds the needs of modern, high-performance stadium networks than the positive results we see at Kyle Field and its 100,000 football fans accessing the network ,” said Mike Dagenais, Tellabs President and CEO. “ Because of the Tellabs Optical LAN and the single mode fiber cabling, we are confident that this stadium network design affords TAMU with the most flexibility for future network demands – both in gigabit Ethernet port density growth and data network capacity ."
