CBS Executive Fired After Demeaning Vegas Shooting Victims

While the rest of the nation mourned the stunning mass shooting that killed more than 50 people and injured hundreds more, a CBS executive on Monday whacked the victims.
As first reported by the Daily Caller, Hayley Geftman-Gold posted on her Facebook page that she had no sympathy for the victims, who were attending a country music festival Sunday on the Las Vegas Strip.
"If they wouldn't do anything when children were murdered I have no hope that Repugs [sic] will ever do the right thing," wrote Geftman-Gold, vice president and senior counsel of strategic transactions. "I'm actually not even sympathetic bc country music fans often are Republican gun toters."
The Facebook page appears to have been deleted. CBS Corp. moved swiftly against Geftman-Gold.
"This individual, who was with us for approximately one year, violated the standards of our company and is no longer an employee of CBS," stated the network. "Her views as expressed on social media are deeply unacceptable to all of us at CBS. Our hearts go out to the victims in Las Vegas and their families."
The Media Research Center's Newsbusters site reported that Vocativ noted that Geftman-Gold had planned an impromptu victory party in Brooklyn at the intersection of President Street and Clinton Street last year for Democrat Hillary Clinton's expected victory in the presidential election.
Rich Noyes, research director at the Media Research Center, said the Facebook post reflects a larger bias.
"If it is true, it shows a cultural divisiveness of elites against the rank-and-file American that has created this division," he said.
Noyes noted that CNN reporter Jeff Zeleny voiced the same stereotype in reporting the shooting when he said the crowd likely was filled with supporters of President Donald Trump.
According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, a man named Stephen Paddock had multiple rifles in his room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino and began firing without warning into the crowd at the Route 91 Harvest Festival.
Police stormed into his room; authorities believe Paddock took his own life.
Beyond the insensitivity of the comment, it reveals a gross exaggeration of the political leanings of country music fans. Although fans of the genre do skew conservative, there are plenty of Democrats who enjoy the music, too.
A 2004 CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll, for instance, showed that 30 percent of voters backing then-President George W. Bush listed country as their favorite music, but 15 percent of challenger John Kerry's voters also liked country music the best of any genre.
