OTTAWA, Sept. 29, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With October signalling the onset of Fall, there is an annual pilgrimage of winemakers to Preston Hardware, where since 2012, exceptional grapes from Spain have been made available to winemakers looking for the best grapes to make wines they love, and outclass commercial wines that cost many times more.
On October 1 from 10:30 am until 2:00 pm Charles Fajgenbaum, Owner of Fermentations, (which sources, harvests and brands Grapemasters grapes), the importer of the grapes will be at Preston Hardware, talking about the recent harvest in Spain’s famed Montsant Appelation. More than just a distributor, Mr. Fajgenbaum goes over every year and for 10 days works with the picking crews as the grapes are hand harvested and immediately prepared for shipping to winemakers in Canada. Mac MacDonald, a long standing wine expert and winemaker, will be hosting the event at Preston Hardware, 248 Preston Street, Ottawa, ON K1R 7R4.
"We work with a winery, not just a grower to make sure that the grapes are grown to perfect levels of ripeness for flavor. The winery, Mas de la Cacadora, has regularly made the Guia Penin, Spain’s top wine guide. This attention to detail in the vineyard, which also includes limited yields of grapes per vine and drip irrigation to keep the plants at optimal health, is the perfect beginning for great wines.”
This attention to detail has translated into baskets of awards for wines made with these grapes. At the 2017 Amateur Winemakers Of Ontario Competition, over 60 wines made with these grapes took gold, silver and bronze medals, with Ottawa area winemakers represented in the mix.
Since 1993, Charles has operated Fermentations!, Toronto’s go to U-Brew for people looking to make exceptional wines. "I began importing these grapes in 2012, and the great success in competitions led many home based amateur winemakers to line up when the grapes arrive. With distribution not just in Ottawa and Toronto, but also in British Columbia, Canadian winemakers may just be the new vanguard of Catalan wines."
