Martin Lawrence Galleries Dallas Unveils a World-C
Post# of 301275
"We want to see the newest things. That is because we want to see the future, even if only momentarily. It is the moment in which, even if we don’t completely understand what we have glimpsed, we are nonetheless touched by it. This is what we have come to call art”-Takashi Murakami
Martin Lawrence Galleries (MLG), in Dallas at the Galleria mall located at 13350 Dallas Parkway, Galleria Level 1, embraced the Pop art movement in the 1960s, 70’s and 80’s-and its manipulative and symbolic culture-by creating collaborations with Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. MLG produced Warhol’s: Campbell Soup Boxes (and holds one of the largest collections of Andy Warhol’s in the world) and published Haring’s Growing Suite and Limited-Edition catalog-Keith Haring 1988, a one-man exhibition in Los Angeles of paintings, drawings and prints.
“Voyeurism is a director’s job description. It’s an artist’s too”-Andy Warhol
MLG also acquired, and offers for sale, works by Larry Rivers and Roy Lichtenstein. Rivers is considered to be the godfather of Pop art; his work was a merge of nonobjective, non-narrative with objective abstraction. Lichtenstein’s style fluctuated between Cubism and Expressionism and in the 1950s he began to incorporate hidden images of cartoon characters such as Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny into his abstract works — his works have been called a document of wonderment of the graphic formulae and his contribution to escalating comics to fine art can be compared Warhol’s soup works.
“I believe that any art communicates what you’re in the mood to receive.”-Larry Rivers
MLG’s latest additions to their collection of world-class artists include Takashi Murakami and Philippe Bertho. Murakami, often called the “Warhol of Japan’, coined the term superflat, which describes both the aesthetic characteristics of Japanese artistic tradition and the nature of post-war Japanese culture and society. His artistic style and motifs are uniquely his own. (childlike anime-esque characters rendered in bright colors, flat and highly glossy surfaces) Bertho’s works are paintings of ideas, imbued with delicacy and restraint. He is a master of the trompe l’oeil (“to fool the eye”) style, a technique which literally creates the illusion of a 3 rd dimension on a flat surface. His work draws comparisons to the “Pop Surrealist Decades” which included Warhol and Dalí.
