I agree with what you're saying about the FDA in general, but a trip to any drug store or nutritional store will show all sorts of products that make claims as to their benefits with nearly zero proof. I don't doubt that somewhere the benefits of things like Omega 3 have been shown, but the claims that Omega 3 from Krill is better than from other sources is unproven to my knowledge. Costco probably sells a dozen or more different forms of Omega 3, few if any have been through any real trials for their efficacy, but they may have been checked for purity.
The FDA is charged with doing much to inspect practically everything we consume, but unfortunately they are not funded sufficiently to do their job. Every time we learn of people sickened by some product it's invariably seen that months or even years have gone by since the last time a proper inspection was made by the FDA. It's not their fault, they simply don't have the funds, and they've said so.
We as consumers think the products we consume are safe because of the FDA, but they constantly tell Congress that their budget is insufficient to do all they're tasked to do. I don't know how many products would be off the shelves if the FDA truly did all they're tasked to do. I would suspect that many products would have to either prove what they claim, or stop making their claims.
Of course when it comes to what's found in marijuana stores, it's doubtful that the FDA has looked at anything as Federally, it's not a legal product in the first place. Clearly the U.S. needs to make changes in the approach to cannabis, but until they do, I believe our psoriasis cream, sublingual tablets, etc could be sold in State's where medical marijuana is legal without further proof of efficacy. It is the company's goal of selling proven drugs that prevent such sales, not the Federal Govt. or State Govts. in State's where medical marijuana is legal.
