Hurricane Irma - Good luck to everyone in its path
Post# of 997
Try to get:
bottled water (if you cant find any, fill Rubbermaid containers with tap water and put it in the refrigerator (not to keep it cold; but rather to keep it as air tight as possible.
some people recommend freezing water in containers in the freezer as well if you have room. Just dont overfill your container; ice expands.
Some people recommend heavily duct taping your refrigerator door shut (if possible)
canned food
can opener
first aid kit
flashlight
batteries
garbage bags
hand sanitizer
an emergency meeting phone number or place! if people get misplaced, agreeing to call a designated number after the storm, such as an Aunt in a different state to let her know youre ok, will let other family members who call her know youre ok.
if you have a harddrive/USB drive with important things on it, put it in several ziplock bags and then put that somewhere high. tie it down or heavily tape it to something so it doesnt blow or float away.
toilet paper. unroll and put in ziplock bags if possible.
if you have a generator, keep it and the fuel OUT OF THE HOUSE . the fumes can kill in seconds.
put your cell phone in several ziplock bags! have it charged BEFORE the storm.and turn off your phone during the storm to conserve power.
some people recommend turning off the power at the panel box to your house BEFORE the storm hits. only do so if you safely know how to!! Do NOT touch any wires and do not go near if the area is wet!!
some people recommend filling the bathtub with water so you have water to flush the toilet if your running water stops working.
put your laptop with charger in several garbage bags; take the air out of each layer and tie each bag with a knot. put in the highest area in your house.
If you have little children, it is NOT recommended to fill your tub! They can drown!
CLEAN CLOTHES! Have sneakers, boots, underwear, jeans, several socks, hat, shirts, sweaters, gloves wrapped TIGHTLY in garbage bags and knot the bag shut. using the red pull strings will NOT make the bag water tight. put them in the top dresser drawer or someplace high.
Use your dishwasher. Not to clean dishes, but its watertight. be sure its dry. you can put important things in there, such as your bagged clothes, bagged laptop, bagged USB drive, car keys. close the door, lock if possible. Do NOT turn it on (obviously). water may seep in there, but as long as things are bagged up, you have less chance of stuff getting wet.
Take pictures of EVERYTHING. we live in a world of selfies, so go make use of your selfie skills by taking pics of your electronics, serial numbers, furniture, printer, computer, everything. email the pics to yourself or text them to family in another state. if your phone breaks, your email will store those pics forever. Do NOT email yourself sensitive info such as social security numbers. emails are NOT secure.
Get your paper documents into several plastic bags. take the air out, tie knots, put in dishwasher or some place you believe will keep it dry.
Do not stay near windows or skylights.
The trick is, if getting wet can ruin it.. put it in a bag.
If leaving your house is the safest route, it may be best to do so. things can be replaced.
most important, keep yourself safe. many people get twisted ankles or injured backs while preparing. go slow and steady.
this list isnt complete at all, and although I can not recommend this stuff will work, it may give you a head start on the storm.
