e.g as you say, slavery was a worldwide institution built into many societies,including africa and the native americans- both groups regularly raided other tribes and took slaves and trafficked in slaves- I've read that pocahantas was taken as a slave in one such tribal raid in her youth and the lewis and clark expedition accidentally became an instrument to return to her people
