Trump's Prediction for Sheriff Joe Arpaio:
'I Think He's Going to Be Just Fine'

Hours before President Trump's big rally in Phoenix, Arizona, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Trump would not be pardoning Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio during the event.

Arpaio faces up to six months in prison after being convicted of misdemeanor contempt of court for refusing to cease detaining suspected illegal immigrants.

Arpaio was a strong supporter of Trump throughout the presidential campaign, and it's long been speculated that Trump could pardon him.

Although the president didn't offer an official pardon during the rally, he did have some encouraging words for "America's toughest sheriff."

"Do the people in this room like Sheriff Joe?" Trump said to cheers from the crowd.

He suggested that Arpaio was convicted of a crime for merely "doing his job," and he said that Arpaio should have had a jury trial instead of a bench trail.

"But you know what? I'll make a prediction: I think he's going to be just fine," Trump said.

He explained that he wouldn't pardon Arpaio at the rally to avoid "causing any controversy."

He added, however, that Arpaio should "feel good."
