The freight forwarding industry in China began to develop in the early 1980s following the China Open Door Reform policy. In 1983, there was only one international freight forwarder registered with the China Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation. By 2006, China had approximately 6,000 international freight forwarders registered with China Ministry of Commerce and approximately 30,000 unregistered freight forwarders operated by individuals or small businesses. The industry's rapid growth is attributed to increasing international trade and relaxed regulations by the Chinese government. In the middle of 2007 China surpassed the United States as the world's second-largest exporter , according to figures released by the World Trade Organization. For the full year of 2007, the international trade reached $2 Trillion an increase of 23.5% from 2006. The value of exports was US $2.1 Trillion, up by 25.7 percent, while that of imports increased by 20.8 percent reaching US $955.8 Billion. Since China joined the WTO in 2002, China has enjoyed an annual rate increase above 20% for the past six years . At the current growth rates, China is projected to overtake Germany as the world's biggest exporter in 2008 .
China's Trade with the World ($ Billion)
NOTE: U.S. exports reported on a FOB basis; imports on a general customs value, CIF basis.
