$MJ HUGE cannabis news from Congress A battle
Post# of 768
A battle is raging in Washington, D.C. over what to do about medical marijuana.
On one side, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, an old-school drug warrior, recently sent a personal letter to Congress asking them to give him the authority to prosecute state-legal medical marijuana patients and caregivers.
The good news is the Senate is listening to YOU, and not Sessions.
The powerful Appropriations Committee voted just a few minutes ago to extend an amendment protecting patients and their providers from federal prosecution.
The provision has been in effect since 2014, and senators just gave a strong bipartisan voice vote to keep it in place.
In the past 24 hours, using Marijuana Majority's action tools, our supporters represented by senators on the Appropriations Committee sent more than 1,500 letters to Capitol Hill in advance of this big vote. You made this victory happen.
Not only that, but the same Senate committee also approved a separate amendment earlier this month that would allow military veterans to get medical cannabis recommendations from Department of Veterans Administration doctors, giving new options and new hope to millions of people who fought for our country.
The bad news is that leadership on the House side this week blocked all marijuana amendments from even receiving a vote in the House.
That includes the massively popular veterans medical cannabis amendment, which passed the House by a wide bipartisan margin just one year ago.
There’s still hope, but your support is needed more than ever to keep these amendments alive.
While drug warriors like Jeff Sessions work overtime to roll back all the marijuana victories we fought so hard to win, we have the majority on our side.
Republican, Democratic and independent voters alike agree: Denying medicine to sick patients is morally indefensible.
With so much hanging in the balance, nobody who cares about justice for marijuana patients can afford to sit this one out.
