Pelosi: New House GOP Budget Would 'Stir Up Violence'
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) accused Republicans of trying to stir up violence with their latest budget proposal, which would sharply boost military spending.
The former House Speaker made the remarks at a rally for the American Federation of Teachers, arguing that the GOP wants too much money for the military at the expense of education and health care.
"A budget that says we do not measure the strength of our country in the health, education, and well-being of our people. We only measure it in military might. You know what that does? It requires more military might. It takes us down the wrong path," she said.
"We take an oath to protect and defend. ... But, that's not the point of this. This is supposed to be a budget that prevents the spread of violence, instead they have a budget that stirs it up," said Pelosi.
The House GOP leadership released Tuesday a 10-year blueprint which includes cuts to Medicare and other domestic programs.
Budget Committee Chairman Diane Black, R-Tenn, argued that the budget would "reform and modernize" Medicare in an effort to balance the budget.
