Einsteins general relativity showed the universe was expanding from an infinitesimally small point of beginning -the big bang-caused/created by an external entity who transcends (exists outside and apart from) creation. Previously scientists had accepted the Newtonian (Newton was a strong Christian) model of physics and a static universe.
Imagine how powerful that causer must be. From Einsteins formula: "Energy = mass times the speed of light squared"- we can see it would take an unbelievable unfathomable amount of energy from that transcendant source to instantly create all the matter of the universe in that initially tiny volume.
Btw many additional proofs of general relativity have been made by many atheists,e.g Hawkings in the 70's, though polls show that 30-50% of people will not change their beliefs no matter how much evidence-something i've seen my entire life growing up in a cult by birth.
Einstein was deeply disturbed by his peoples (Jews) persecution, especially by Nazi Germany-and thus did not believe in a personal creator (the blame the wrong party game) though he believed in a superior reasoning power who created the big bang (the rebellious theologians of his day were never able to answer his questions) so when his field theorems yielded his theory of general relativity he was scared sh-tless.
Apparently rebellious humans never want to be held accountable to a superior power. So to his later embarrassment- and the biggest mistake of his career- he arbitrarily added a cosmological constant to each side of his equation to cancel out the expansion and beginning-a mistake soon shown by others.
Once the expansion and big bang were proven over the following decades as the most tested and proven theorem in the sciences-proven to at least 14 decimal points- the big debate became: "Will gravity ever slow down the expansion of the universe".
Before the discovery of dark energy in 1998ff, there eventually became endless arguments as to whether newly discovered particles like neutrinos would tip the balance of the universe's mass in favor of gravity eventually slowing down the expansion etc.
When dark energy was discovered etc. it was one of those many slap in the face moments to "we now know everything" scientists, for we now know
that the observable matter of the universe -stars made bright by nuclear fusion-is less than 1% of the matter of the universe.
And that dark energy (a temporary euphemism until scientists discover exactly what it is and give it a more precise name) comprises a staggering 72.1% of the total cosmic density.
Meanwhile exotic dark matter comprises 23.3%- matter which weakly interacts w light/radiation
and ordinary dark matter 4.35%- interacts w light but doesnt produce it -such as stars too small to produce fusion plus planets etc.and the nasty interstellar space dust /rocks which, inter alia, limit even theoretical travel speeds to less than 1% of the speed of light.
btw the unified field theorem has now been proven- reconciling quantum mechanics and gravity etc -(the last major objection to general relativity and the reason why Einstein didnt believe in quantum mechancis) from that theorem flow all the theorems of general relativity -another independent confirmation of relativity.
its hard to describe something we dont know enough about it to accurately do so except to say its a self stretching property of space which pushes the universe to expand-the opposite of gravity. We now know the age of the universe is ca 13.8 billion years- for the 1st c 7.2 billion years gravity exerted more force than dark energy but as the universe expanded gravitys universe wide effect became weaker and dark energy -due to the larger growing fabric of space -became stronger - so the universe's expansion has accelerated the last 6.7 billion years.
As I said atheist astronomers are actually crying that this expansion will make it impossible to see the farthest reaches of the universe in many millions of years. (We were only able to see the farthest reaches beginning ca 1994 w the Keck and other modern telescopes).
Instead they should be crying that they are so rebellious that no amount of evidence is able to overcome their rebellion and that thus a just creator of the big bang will relegate them to a place they will not want to be for eternity- which makes millions of years a mere trifle/sniffle.
