before the discovery of dark energy and dark matter(which make up the great majority of the mass in the universe) scientists were debating whether there was enough mass for the universe to stop spreading apart (something they didnt even know was occurring until einsteins 1916 relativity) and start contracting-now they know that dark energy -the self stretching property of space- began outgunning gravity ca 7 billion years ago,w the universe flying apart at ever increasing spreads since,causing some astronomers to cry because in many millions of years we wont be able to see the farthest reaches of the universe as such exceeds the speed of light-something we only recently were able to see anyway due to advances in telescopes.
They should be crying about the condition of the human race,which has a much shorter time limit.
yes some scientists thought they knew everything there was to know, but not any more -they cant even keep up w knowledge due to specialization-and much new knowledge is rejected due to preconceived ideas.
