Sailormen Inc. Popeyes Raises More than $830,000 to Support Kids and Adults Fighting Muscular Dystrophy

MIAMI LAKES, Fla., July 13, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sailormen Inc. , one of the largest domestic franchisees of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurants, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) announced today that the annual MDA Golf Classic and the 2017 “Appetite for a Cure” program have raised an outstanding $831,358 to save and improve the lives of kids and adults with muscular dystrophy, ALS and related life-threatening diseases that severely weaken muscle strength and mobility.

The Sailormen Inc., Golf Classic celebrated its 13 th anniversary on May 11 in Miami Lakes, Fla. at Don Shula’s Golf and Country Club. More than 60 companies sponsored the premier golf event that raised a record breaking $234,938 to help families served by MDA.

Additionally, this year's “Appetite for a Cure” program ran from Jan. 30 through March 19 at participating Popeyes restaurants in South Florida and across the Southeast. The program raised $596,420, through the sale of $1 coupon cards worth $30 to be used toward free and discounted purchases during future visits to Popeyes.

"For thirteen years, Sailormen/Popeyes employees, customers and business partners have come together to raise urgent funds that help MDA provide its families with the critical resources they need to live longer and grow stronger,” said Sailormen Inc. CEO Kara Nordstrom. “With both this year’s golf tournament, and our “Appetite for a Cure” campaign, I am proud to say we donated $831,358 to MDA, and look forward to an even bigger year in 2018.”

“The relationship between MDA and Sailormen is proof of the longstanding commitment to the South Florida community,” said MDA Associate Executive Director Kathi DeVito. With their support, we can bring strength and independence to hundreds of local kids and adults living with life-threatening neuromuscular diseases. It’s with Sailormen/Popeyes’ assistance that we can provide families with the care they need today, while working to accelerate progress in the search for treatments and cures.”

Funds raised during the annual coupon program and golf tournament help MDA’s fund groundbreaking research and life-enhancing services such as the MDA Care Centers at the University of Miami School of Medicine .

It also helps send kids, ages 6-17, to “the best week of the year” at a weeklong, barrier-free MDA Summer Camp at Gold Coast Camp in Lake Worth, Fla . About Sailormen Sailormen Inc. is one of the largest domestic franchisees of Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurants, with 132 locations in five states. The company has raised more than $6 million for MDA since 2002.

About MDA MDA is leading the fight to free individuals — and the families who love them — from the harm of muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscle-debilitating diseases that take away physical strength, independence and life. We use our collective strength to help kids and adults live longer and grow stronger by finding research breakthroughs across diseases; caring for individuals from day one; and empowering families with services and support in hometowns across America.
